Fantasy Football Draft Diary: Scott Fish Bowl Draft Recap

Fantasy Football Draft Diary: Scott Fish Bowl Draft Recap

Kendall Valenzuela goes round by round, evaluating her picks during the Scott Fish Bowl Draft so those who will be picking teams in the future can prepare.

We all love draft day, right? The air seems crisper, all your wildest dreams are about to come true because nothing, absolutely NOTHING can ruin this day. Except for … you know, everything!

Here is my draft day diary from my Scott Fish Bowl draft at the amazing Circa Las Vegas. There is truly nothing better than drafting in person with incredible people and I am so excited I got to share this day with everyone. Now brace yourself for heartbreak, laughs and many, many snipes from my leaguemates.

Scott Fish Bowl Draft Diary

Diary Entry #1: The Pre-Draft Bliss

The world is my oyster right now. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining and nothing can ruin my draft day right now, because I still believe everything is going to go perfectly for me today.

We've got a big day in Las Vegas with the Scott Fish Bowl draft starting at 10 a.m. PT down at Circa Swim. The only things I need are all in the Fantasy Life magazine (which is out everywhere now). My draft strategy today is different than any draft I have ever done, because we are doing this for the #content. Today, folks, we are going zero-QB!

Not many people have attempted this before (probably because they enjoy winning), but with Scott Fish Bowl being all for charity it seems like a fun time to try something brand new!

The reason I'm going with the zero-QB approach is mainly because of the scoring settings:

SFB Scoring Settings (All Sites)

  • 6 points for ALL touchdowns
  • 2 points for 2-point conversions
  • 0.04 points per passing yard
  • 0.1 points per rushing or receiving yard
  • 1 point per first down rushing or receiving
  • 1 point of Tight End Premium per reception
  • 0.5 points per carry

There's a good incentive for quarterbacks, but there are also key volume boosters since non-passing first downs are each worth one point and carries are each worth 0.5 points. 2.5 points per reception is also key here, too. I am targeting running backs, elite tight ends, and WR1s during this draft. I have the 1.04 spot this season and am hoping Bijan Robinson falls to me like he did before in a few mock drafts, but this is a sharp group and I highly doubt he's there. A girl can dream though, right?

Diary Entry #2: Don't Panic, Shift

LOL silly me, Bijan at 1.04?! That's why we call it pre-draft bliss. Robinson went 1.01 overall in our live draft, but morale is still high. Here's how the first three picks shaped out before I was officially on the clock:

1.01: Bijan Robinson

1.02: Josh Allen

1.03: Lamar Jackson

I went back and forth a lot on this pick. Should I go for the elite tight end or the elite running back? Trey McBride and Jahmyr Gibbs were on my mind, but I ultimately went with McBride because of the extra point per reception. The vibes are still immaculate.

Diary Entry #3: Sniping season has begun

I didn't count the first round as a snipe, because everyone wanted Robinson, but let me tell you that getting sniped in the second round with Bucky Irving so close to being my first running back really hurts.

There is a third-round reversal in Scott Fish Bowl, so I need to be conscious of who will definitely not make it back to me. At this moment with Irving off the table I decide to go with a receiver … Nico Collins. I'm happy! I think?

To be honest I needed to look up his Fantasy Life projections just to make me feel a little bit better about it. He's projected for 465 total points and 31 points per game. INSERT SIGH OF RELIEF.

Players in my queue at this point: James Cook, George Kittle, Alvin Kamara.

Diary Entry #4: Time to lock in

Lol, yeah, I got none of those guys. The next few picks were all a blur, to be honest. I really wanted to walk away with Alvin Kamara, especially since Robinson was off the board, but we can't have nice things in this league!

I ended up going with Breece Hall, Omarion Hampton, and Rashee Rice for my next three picks. In-person drafts are tough for many reasons, but especially at Circa Swim it's difficult because you're having so much fun! I knew I needed to lock in, but honestly this draft would be difficult no matter what since we were the first group of the whole Scott Fish Bowl to draft. No cheatsheets, just vibes.

My goal for the rest of the draft (we stopped after 10 rounds) was to get value. Since I wasn't planning on drafting a quarterback I knew some solid players would fall to me. Let's see who we can get …

Diary Entry #5: The squad looks alright. I think … maybe?

Yeah this is definitely where the doubt creeps into your mind. Did I make the wrong pick? Should I have been drafting quarterbacks?!

No way, we are here for the content! My next six picks go as follows: Rashee Rice, Tetairoa McMillan, Isiah Pacheco, Jaylen Waddle, Jauan Jennings, and Brian Robinson.

It's hot as ever and time to retire to the hotel.

Diary Entry #6: Let's target more running backs

So far up to this point I have four solid running backs, but it's time to get a few more. I took Luther Burden in the 11th round, but after that we hit Tyjae Spears, Jaydon Blue and Tyler Allgeier. I know Spears dealt with a ton of injuries last season, but even though he missed five games we did see the ceiling—Spears worked as the overall PPR RB5 during fantasy playoffs in Weeks 15-17!

Yes, I am trying to hype myself up on Spears please leave me alone.

I view Allgeier as an elite handcuff option. Allgeier has 586 combined carries and targets in his three-year career (with zero fumbles or drops). Blue was kind of just there, to be honest. I don't love any Cowboys running back this season, but you can squint and try to tell yourself that he will eventually be the RB1. He definitely does have an explosive pass-catching profile.

Diary Entry #7: Whoops

You know what, sometimes life happens and you accidentally go on auto-draft on the Sleeper app. That is how I ended up with Russell Wilson. Pretend you didn't see that.

Diary Entry #8:

It's finally over and we are feeling OK! I've made the Scott Fish Bowl playoffs every year and I don't expect anything to change this season! Happy Scott Fish Bowl, everyone.
