Week 15 Defense (DST) Streamers: Trust the Jags, Niners and More

Jonathan Fuller highlights the top three DST streamers for the first week of the fantasy football playoffs.

It's playoff time. Week 15. You've battled all year for the chance at glory, and now it is just three wins away. Now we are truly playing a weekly game where you have to do whatever it takes to survive and advance. That means leaving no stone unturned when analyzing your start/sit decisions and going in-depth on your kicker and defense options to make sure you squeeze every possible point out of your lineup. If you aren't fortunate enough to roster a defense like Seattle or Houston, you need to thoroughly check waivers in your league in case there are any higher-ranked options that don't qualify for this article.

DST Streamers For Week 15

As usual, I am only considering DSTs available in more than 50% of leagues, and I am looking for DSTs with the ability to create sacks and turnovers rather than minimizing points allowed to the other team, although those two things are correlated. I think this is one of the bigger mistakes fantasy managers make when thinking about fantasy defenses. As you will see in this article, I am generally focused on three things: offensive line play, QB turnover rates and game script.

A poor offensive line matched up against a strong defense line is one of the best signs for a fantasy defense. Putting the opposing QB under pressure increases the likelihood of sacks, fumbles and interceptions. However, not all QBs are created equal, so we also want to target those who have a history of turning the ball over. Lastly, a defense on a team that is heavily favored is another good sign because it means the other team may be forced to call more pass plays as a result of a negative game script, and pass plays are more likely to lead to scoring opportunities for the defense than rush attempts are.

I referenced two of these teams in last week's piece, but fortunately, they are still widely available to help you advance through Week 15:

JAC_jaguars-logo.svgJacksonville Jaguars DST - 36% rostered

There are valid reasons to question whether the Jaguars are as good as their record says they are, but they keep showing up and taking care of business, particularly on defense. That doesn't seem likely to stop in Week 15 against a hapless New York Jets offense.

The Jets don't have a great offense even with everyone healthy, but now they also have injuries at a number of key positions. Most notably, they could be down to their third-string QB if Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields are unable to get healthy for Week 15

The Jaguars haven't been the most consistent defense, but they are opportunistic, forcing 11 fumbles and 15 interceptions, which are both top-10 in the NFL. Regardless of whether the Jets have Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor or Brady Cook under center, it will be a good opportunity to add more turnovers to their total. Cook would certainly be the best matchup due to his lack of experience, but even if Fields or Taylor can play, they will likely be less than 100% healthy and at an elevated risk of leaving mid-game.

Jacksonville is currently favored by 12.5 points in a game with a 41.5 point total, which is a great sign for their defense. Not only are they expected to limit the opposing offense, but they are also expected to lead this game, which should create opportunities to get after the opposing QB to try to create sacks and turnovers. This is about as good a matchup as possible, and Jacksonville should be able to capitalize on it as they look to solidify their playoff position.

SF_49ers-logo.svgSan Francisco 49ers DST - 24% rostered

The 49ers don't have a particularly talented defense, but they are well-coached and have been relatively easy to predict for fantasy purposes. They have struggled in tough matchups but delivered against weaker opposition. Before their Week 14 bye, they had a string of those easy matchups against the Cardinals, Panthers and Browns, and they averaged 8.6 fantasy points per game throughout that run.

They are now coming out of their bye and take on a Titans offense that has been playing better recently, but is still among the most favorable matchups for opposing DSTs. Cam Ward has taken at least three sacks in 10 games this season and just had his first game with multiple passing TDs last week. It does have my attention that he has been playing better despite a string of tough matchups, but the list of QBs who are more likely to throw a pick-six or take five or more sacks is very short.

The 49ers are at home, have the rest advantage and are favored by 12.5 points at the time of writing, which was somewhat surprising to me. That line felt about right for the Jaguars vs Jets game, but I wasn't expecting the spread to be so wide for this one. That's just another data point that suggests the San Francisco DST is a strong streaming option in Week 15.

CAR_panthers-logo.svgCarolina Panthers DST - 4% rostered

Carolina is in contention for a playoff spot, largely thanks to their defense. Bryce Young has had his moments, but I think one of the most underrated storylines in the NFL this season is Carolina going from a historically bad defense in 2024 to a defense that ranks exactly in the middle of the pack for points allowed through 14 weeks.

Similar to Jacksonville, Carolina's calling card is the ability to create turnovers. They've recorded 12 interceptions this year, which is sixth-most in the league. The Panthers are now coming off their bye and now get a New Orleans Saints team that is fresh off an upset win against the Buccaneers.

Although he created a few highlight plays in that game, Tyler Shough didn't play particularly well. The rookie QB had 144 passing yards, no passing TDs, one interception and took three sacks. Shough's 24.6% pressure-to-sack rate is fourth-worst among qualifying QBs, and he has thrown an interception in five of the six games where he has played meaningful snaps.

Carolina is favored by 2.5 points on the road and had an extra week to prepare for this matchup. With Tampa Bay playing on Thursday, they will know whether they need a win to keep pace or move into first place on their own. Either way, I expect the Panthers to be highly motivated and well-prepared for this divisional matchup, which makes them my streaming choice for deep leagues where the top options aren't available.
