Guilloteenies: The Way to Play Postseason Fantasy Football
Adam Ronis provides an introduction and tips on how to play Guilloteenies, the postseason edition of Guillotine Leagues.
While Guillotine Leagues™ are over for the regular season, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance to participate in the postseason. The Guilloteenie contest is a great way to experience the Guillotine Leagues™ format and have interest in every NFL playoff game.
Those who have participated in Guillotine Leagues™ know the excitement and rush the format provides each week. If you haven’t tried one yet, now is the perfect time to experience a Guilloteenie to help prepare you for next season.
Play Guilloteenies During the NFL Playoffs
The lowest-scoring team gets chopped each week until there is one left standing. All of the players from the team eliminated go to the waiver wire and the remaining teams get to place bids on the free agents using the Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB).
Guilloteenie leagues start with five teams and there are eight rounds. There are no bench spots with a starting lineup of 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE and 2 Flex spots. The goal is to survive each week and not win each week, except for the final. Each week there is an ability to bolster the roster with free agent additions and the roster will look different compared to the one drafted.
In the regular season, the waiver wire is plentiful. That might not be the case in Guilloteenies. Keep in mind, as the teams get eliminated from the postseason, the player pool will shrink.
Unlike many postseason contests, stacking isn’t necessary in Guilloteenie. If you draft a few players from a team that goes to the Super Bowl then it clearly is advantageous. I participated in a Guilloteenie this afternoon and took three players from the Rams even though it wasn’t the plan going in.
This will turn out to be a bad strategy if the Rams lose to the Panthers or lose in the next round since I have Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams and Matthew Stafford. If they advance to the Super Bowl, it could result in a championship. If there is any team to stack in round 1, it’s the Rams with a team total of 28.5 points as 10-point road favorites.
The challenge in these formats is the plan with Denver and Seattle. Since both teams have a bye this week, any of those players drafted will get a zero. This is extremely risky because we need a high floor and going in with a zero puts you behind. Then if one of your other starters gets injured early, it’s going to be a deep hole to dig out of.
The most desirable player from the two teams is Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He wasn’t selected until the fourth pick of round four. No other player from Denver or Seattle was drafted and this is the strategy I employ. A player getting just 3.4 points can be the difference from getting chopped.
In the regular season, it's 18 weeks and conserving money for the final few weeks makes sense. In Guilloteenie, there isn’t time and being aggressive with free agents is the way to go. Most Seahawks and Broncos players will be available next week and there could be a few good options among the team that gets chopped.
The drafts go really fast with a one-minute clock over eight rounds and there’s an option to play for free or in a paid league. Head over to guillotineleagues.com now and draft today.
